GC2008: Day two, another blowout
11-08-2008

Strong winds gusting to 30knots and beyond made for no racing on day two. Here is the short from our correspondents.

One hour postponement; very similar to yesterday.
Rescue boat is going out to check the wind conditions at 11:30 and then a decision will be made.
On the up side, it is not raining (at the moment).

Few people have been out on Ribs and they all say it's totally unraceable. Gusts to 33kts earlier!

Paul (Alani) went out on borrowed kit Tim. Bic raceboard with a 5.6m sail. Support RIB clocked him at 25kts plus several times before he crashed and burned!

When he got ashore he reckoned the gusts were probably somewher near 2x windspeed and it was just impossible to hold onto the sail as it powered up too quickly to react!

GC2008 - Day 1: Blowout..
09-08-2008

Todays racing is cancelled. Strong winds makes racing impossible. Here is the report from our correspondent at Mumbles

Rescue boat went out; average wind was around 22-24 over the course; max gust was 34kts!

No sailing today; plan to race from 11am tomorrow; however the forcast for tomorrow is similar!!!!

GC2008 - Day 1: Strong winds and postponement
09-08-2008

A day with string winds at the coast of Wales. Here is the take from our reporter at the scene at 1200 hours:

2 hrs postponement.  Forcast is bad 23kts gusting to 30; rescue boat has been out and over 2 minute period; average 21kts, gusting 29 -

It seems like the race committee is keen to have some races today as they have postponed for just two hours. Fortunately Mumbles Yacht club have a bar and other facilities where the competitors can rest while waiting. We all hope this will not be a repeat of last years GC blowout.

Global Challenge 2008 kicks off tomorrow
08-08-2008

The Formula 16 Global Challenge begins tomorrow. Organizers are the the GBR class association and Mumbles Yacht Club.

We have been promised daily updates from participants and several video kits and GPS units are at the venue. Here is a small report from our reporter Simon Longstaff who also participates in the event on F16 GBR 553.

Today has been a day of bimbling, and sailing. I did the first practice race and then decided I need to change some settings and so went in as Hans came out; Overall Mark P ran 3 or 4 races round decent sized W/L courses. Some were going fast up wind, some were going fast down wind.

The wind was a shift F2-3. Tomorrow's forecast looks a bit dicey (22-30 kts) so people are tieing boats to anything heavy they can find.

Formula 16: formation du comité de presse
10-01-2008

Cordialement,

Hans Klok
Chairman F16 Governing Council

2007 Alter Cup sailed on Blade F16s
29-04-2007

Alter Cup Blades
Alter Cup Blades
John Casey and John Williams have won the 2007 Hobie Alter Cup.  The event was sailed on 10 brand new Blade F16s supplied by Vectorworks Sail.  This year's event was hosted by Melbourne Yacht Club in Melbourne, Florida.  The Alter Cup is the US Sailing Mulitihull Championship, and is sailed each year on a different boat.  The event puts sailors on identical equipment, and teams swap boats between races.  The Blades performed impressively throughout the event, allowing all team weights to do well.  Results, reports and photos can be found on the US Sailing website.

Most of the competition boats have now been sold, providing a boost the fast-growing US F16 class. The boats sport new high aspect ratio daggerboards, designed by Catamaranparts.

Zandvoort Global Challenge 2007
17-09-2006
As announced recently on the forum, the 2007 F16 Global Challenge will no longer be taking place in Singapore.  Fortunately, a new venue has now been found, and the Global Challenge will take place in August 2007 at Zandvoort in the Netherlands.  The Global Challenge will incorporate 5 days of racing, combined with a full programme of off-the-water activities.  For those who just can't get enough sailing, there is the option of participating in a 2-day open event hosted by the sailing club on the following weekend.  Details of the event will be posted on this website (follow the link on the left or click here for the latest information)

U.S. F16 Class Association Formed
12-08-2006
The formal organization of the U.S. F16 Class Association has been completed. The inaugural membership has ratified an operating constitution. This is a major step in the recognition of the F16 class as a viable beach cat option in the United States. The organization will be a strong proponent of the international formula rule, with an express purpose of promoting F16 sailing in the United States. All the members of the class association are excited to be a part of a growing class of performance catamarans in the United States. Stay tuned for announcements regarding the inaugural officers and class strategies. Please contact tbshannon[at]charter.net for more information.
