Global Challenge 2009 - Final Result
Tuesday, 17 November 2009

Saturday, the last day of the Global Challenge, was another great day. The last 3 races of a series of 15 (!) were finished in lighter conditions than the last days (winds around 10 knots). I'm sure everyone on the water enjoyed this last sunny day of sailing in Florida. day_5

The top 2 boats (Robbie Daniel/Taylor Reiss and John Casey/Dalton Tebo) had another great day and kept their positions. Greg Goodall/Kelly Krueger still managed to jump over Olli Jason/Patrick Gilles to complete the top three.

With the slightly lighter conditions the last days, some remarkable performances of the lighter crews cannot be left unmentionned. Single handed Ed Mills managed to sail three top ten places with a 3rd place as best result! Also Matt McDonald/Gina McDonald made there statement with two second places and a bullet on the last day.

Global Challenge 2009 - racing day 2
Thursday, 12 November 2009

On day 2, Wednesday, they had 3 races. Wind was 10-15 knots but some rain showers made sure some high winds made their appearance at the first start. Top positions have not changed today.

Read more to check the overall results up to now (6 races sailed, 1 to discard) and to see a selection of pictures of the first days.

Global Challenge 2009 - racing day 1
Wednesday, 11 November 2009

On the first day of the event three races were finished in great sailing weather. Not so gusty as the practice day, 12 to 15 knots.

Todays top teams were: John Casey and crew, Robbie Daniels and crew, Gregg Goodall and crew, all on Vipers.
But those high in the rankings will have to battle to stay there. The Boca Ciega Bay playing field is known for its shifty winds, so only those reading the shifts well will keep their positions.

Global Challenge 2009 - practice race
Tuesday, 10 November 2009

Kick-off of the F16 Global challenge on Monday (I'll be reporting with a little delay as I'm in Europe and have to wait untill the morning to do a first report...).

The first boats went onto the water today to do final rig checks and to get used to the Tampa Bay. The wind was blowing 18 with gusts to 25 knots, so not really a warm up Smile. Some liked it, I guess others might be wishing Hurricane Ida would go away...

Competition promises to be though as a lot of top teams (read team as 1 or 2-up...) will be on the starting line on Tuesday.
Both Greg and Brett Goodall and their local distributor are present on Vipers, Team McDonald of Falcon Marine LLC is sailing the new Falcon and local toppers Olli Jason/Patrick and Olli/Joanna will be sailing Blades. Also a lot of different designs are expected on the starting line, but as we are still awaiting the final entry list nothing is yet confirmed.

Continue to check this site daily for more updates and links to results, pictures, ...

Dutch Nationals 2009
Thursday, 13 August 2009
So the first Dutch Nationals ever. You know the saying: "Tall oaks grow from little acorns"? Well we did start small, unfortunately only 3 Formula 16 boats (all Blades) on the starting line. Apparently some people on holiday, others with injuries and other more recent F16 owners did not feel ready yet to compete in a race. What a pity! But still we made the best out of it. Here's the story.

UK Nationals 2009
Wednesday, 12 August 2009

Mumbles Yacht Club hosted the 2009 F16 National Championships for the third time in succession following the tried and tested format of three races per day over three days. Unfortunately, due to the financial crisis, the number of entries has decreased from 12 in 2006 to only 5 in 2009. Those who didn’t participate this year really missed out on some great racing conditions. Over the three days whilst racing the wind never dropped below 8 knots and some of the stronger winds were reaching 16 knots. The sea state although a little choppy by Mumbles standards leveled off as the event went on to what can only be described as near purr…fect Cat conditions.

Viper F16 - Alter cup boat for 2009
Monday, 27 April 2009

For the second time in three years an F16 design has been chosen as Alter Cup boat. The Hobie Alter Cup or U.S. Multihull Championship is intended to determine a U.S. National Multihull Champion and is sailed annually on various types of multihulls at various venues. Each year the event invites 20 teams, who have won their area or class championship to compete on identical equipment provided by a single manufacturer.

After the Blade F16, Alter cup boat in 2007, the Viper F16 is the Alter cup boat of this year. AHPC has the rare opportunity to supply their catamarans two years in a row. After a great feedback from last year with the Capricorn F18, this year the Viper F16 promises fast, competitive racing.

The five day regatta will be held in Clearwater Beach, Florida, October 17-21 and hosted by the Clearwater Sailing Center. Already there is great excitement from the sailors to be competing on such a fast, exciting and versatile F16 design as the Viper.

This is a great opportunity for the Viper and the F16 class in general to gainviper_alter_cup
exposure to a high caliber of sailors, and to the world of multihull sailing. At AHPC they are proud and excited to have this opportunity to promote such a strong and growing class of catamaran and encourage everyone to keep an eye on the regatta.

The demand for the new Viper design has been a hit in the US and all the Alter Cup boats are expected to be sold before the event even starts. The boat offers, as other F16 designs, a unique opportunity to be sailed single handed or double. Owners have been very excited about the boat and the versatility that it offers. They are amazed that this level of performance is available in a 16' boat.

AHPC want to put special thanks on their US Distributors, Fun In The Sun
(Jill Nickerson and Robbie Daniel) for all the fantastic work they have done.

New F16 model - Falcon F16
Tuesday, 07 April 2009

Another F16 model hits the water. Falcon Marine debuted a new F16 at the Tradewinds regatta in January. And how!  Matt and Gina ended up first in the F16 class.

Built/designed by Matt McDonald, producer of the US Blade F16, the new Falcon F16 is still a wave piercer like the Blade and shares many similarities.

The Falcon takes the design evolution a few steps further, a more refined hull shape with additional volume, free board and styling highlight some of the changes made to the design.

The goal of the designer was to create a platform that had equal or better upwind performance to that of the already proven very fast Blade, yet is more stable and easier to push in strong and gusty downwind conditions.

Based on the boats first sail, those goals have been met and Falcon Marine looks forward to continuing to dial in the rig and prove how fast an F16 can be.

This design is the 7th production F16 design on the market giving the class another boost.

Vele di Pasqua Italia
Wednesday, 04 February 2009

Dear F16 sailors,

Very often is told that the European international sailing season starts with the Vele di Pasua in Italy. The event exsist for 35 years already with big starting fieldsin several classes like A-class ( 80+ boats ), Tornado, Hobie 16 and several other classes. The F16 was never there and maybe the 35 version of the event is a good point in time to be there. So like Eurocat last year lets give it a go and put the F16 on the map in this big event.

It will be sailed during Easter on 11th to 13th April 2009 in Cesenatico ( Italiy.).

The website for finding the NOR and more information is http://www.congregavilisti.it or just put in Google "Vele di Pasqua"

Hope to see a lot of F16's during Easter.

Best Regards,

Hans Klok

GC2008: Final results
Tuesday, 12 August 2008

We congratulate John Pierce with first place in the GC2008. The GC2008 proved to be a windy event with all the drama hard winds bring. John sailed a consistent series with a fourth and third place as his drop races. Great performance!

In second place Joanna Lienti and Geert Ruesink also sailed a very consistent series, also with a fourth and third as their drop races.  In the end just one point differed between first and second! Pretty amazing considering how little time they had to train together before the event. Joanna flew in from the USA just a couple of days before the first race.

Third place was won by Kathleen and Gill from Belgium, our PR committee members. Hopefully we will get som videos and photos from them later on. Full results can be found on http://www.mumblesyachtclub.co.uk/results/2008/f16worlds.htm

The event was troubled with too much wind, just like last year in Zandvoort. Only two out of the planned four racing days was safe for sailing, and even then there was some breakages. One boat reportedly broke a spreader after the start of race one, but managed to save the rig. Well done!

The depth of skills in the class is growing, considering the winner of the GC2006 finished in fifth and the 2007 champion finished in eight position on the scoreboard (to be fair, the 2007 champion had to leave early and lost the three last races).

Monday evening there was a meeting where the president, secretary and treasurer reported on the status of the class and the close future. Look for an announcement from the Governing Council to all members on this soon.

We have not recieved reports on the social activites and who did best at the bar, but we expect some war stories both from the bar and from the sailing on our forum presently.

GC2008: Day three, rought conditions

Day three offered rought conditions for the competitiors but the RC and sailors managed to pull off no less than five races. Here are the results and the short but somewhat ironic story from our correspondent.

Well what a fantastic sail.....
